Appreciation For A Simple Wedding

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

My husband and I recently watched 27 dresses, it’s a cute movie. It had me thinking about how important it is to make the right decision about who you marry (I know I did!) and it also made me appreciate how much more simple my wedding was than the girls who worry so much about everything being perfect and they spend a fortune (or their parents do) on a wedding dress, fancy bridal lingerie, reception and honeymoon.

My wedding dress was $150 and I did the alterations myself, Esme (my brother-in-law’s wife) lent me her tiara, my twin sister made the wedding invitations. My sister and friends took pictures. I will have to say though that my parents did throw together a very nice reception in British Columbia for us and we also had a fun open house in Tennesee that my in-laws had for us a few months later. I really didn’t care about everything being perfect because to me the marriage was so much more important than the wedding. I do wish that we went on a honeymoon though, it would have been nice to have gone on a nice vacation before having children.

The Baby Borrowers

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The newest NBC reality show debuted last night, The Baby Borrowers features 5 teenage couples (at least the girls) who *think* they can handle having a baby. The couples will take care of a baby for 3 days, then take care of toddlers, children, pre-teens and even elderly people. All while living in a gorgeous home and not *really* having to deal with the actual financial stress that most young families need to deal with.

Obviously I don’t think this show will be a total reality check for the teens and of course that would be impossible to do but if this show does come back next season (I don’t think it will) the producers should have the teens live in a not so nice home and be given a limited amount of money where they will need to carefully budget their expenses.

It will be interesting to see how the teens do though. I am sure the boys will be the first to admit they are not ready to give up their xbox 360’s in exchange for providing for a family.

Who Still Wears Pocket Watches?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

It seems that cell phones have become the new pocket watch. When I think of an actual pocket watch I imagine a 19th century train conductor pulling out his pocket watch to see what time it was. According to this wikipedia article men considered wrist watches feminine until World War 1 when officers began to wear wrist watches to access the time more easily. Now women are no longer viewing pocket watches as too masculine. With some new pocket watches being made very small, pocket watches are now viewed as a piece of jewelery that can be very feminie especially if worn on on a necklace.

Has Anyone Tried Vonage?

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I want to cancel my cell phone plan soon and get maybe get a VOIP plan that has unlimited USA and Canada calling. I am looking into trying Vonage which is $25 per month compared to my 300 minutes, $30 per month cell phone bill and we can call our families whenever we want (including to Canada!) and not have to worry about how many minutes we have left.

Has anyone tried Vonage or a similar plan? I would like to know what other peoples experiences are before signing a contract.

What Do You Hold Onto?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Over the last 3.5 years my husband and I have moved 7 times and each time we have gotten rid of a bunch of junk. Which is good because I really don’t like clutter.

While looking for Sariah and Rebekah’s baby books a few days ago I ran into a box of old textbooks from as long as 4 years ago. I guess we have been holding onto them with hopes of selling. We have sold most of our textbooks online but I think if we haven’t sold these textbooks by now, it is time to take them to the thrift store. Except for my husbands biology and chemistry textbooks which he wants to hang onto for graduate school.

What have you held onto that you now want to get rid of?

Flip Flops Or Sandals?

One thing that my husband and I learned that we had in common soon after we started dating was that we both hate to wear flip flops. Having that piece of material between our toes just drives us crazy. Many people look forward to summertime when they can wear flip flops and some people even wear them all year round! I am looking forward to summer so I can toss my socks and shoes aside and wear my sandals - which reminds me, I need to buy some sandals!

Which do you prefer flip flops or sandals?

Plasma Tv’s - A Guy Thing?

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I don’t know if it is just me and the girls I am friends with but it seems like Plasma Tv’s are more of a guy thing. My Dad won a $1000 gift card to Best Buy and bought a big screen plasma with it and most of the people I know who have plasma’s their husbands had to beg their wife for it. Everytime my husband and I walk by an electronics department my husband has to stare at the plasmas on their plasma tv mount and go on about the picture quality - I really couldn’t care less.

Do you think Plasma Tv’s are more of a guy thing?

Google Doesn’t Own My Blog

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

When I first started this blog in December of 2006 one of my goals was to reach a google page rank of at least a 3. I researched how to gain a higher page rank and I worked hard at writing posts with good content and aquiring links to my blog.  I was so happy when I learned just a few months later that this blog was given a page rank of 3 which helped me to be able to write more posts that I would get paid for.

Several months ago, as many paid bloggers know, Google took away the page ranks of most bloggers who were involved with writing sponsored posts. I was sad about this because the money I make blogging really makes a difference to my family’s financial situation as my husband is still a student and I thought that my days of being able to be paid to write blog posts would soon be over.

In our wonderful free market world, things always evolve and the people over at Izea realized that google should not be the only ones to dictate a blog’s rank in the blogosphere. Izea worked hard to develop a Real Rank which ranks blogs based on traffic, influence and links.

I believe that the Real Rank is a lot more accurate than the google page rank as some blogs have hardly any content and have a higher page rank than other blogs that are a lot more influential. Find out your Real Rank at IzeaRanks.com! Mine seems to fall anywhere from top 30% to 60% depending on my traffic for that week.

Idol Give’s Back Under Fire

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

As a “family show” American Idol has a lot of people outraged about their Idol Give’s Back show. With a few very skits that were not very family friendly,  apperances by Snoop Dog and Kobe Bryant, censoring ‘Jesus’ Out of the song ‘Shout to the Lord’ then finising the show with Ben Stiller cussing. That was bleeped out of course but everyone easily got the idea of what was going on.

Sure didn’t motivate me to give to their cause! I would also like to know if American Idol gives the proceeds from their commercial profits to the charity.

One positive thing I got from the show was how different the lives of the poor in Africa are to the poor in the United States, Canada, Britain and other ‘developed’ countries. Helping out people in developed nations is a very worthwhile cause, but compared to Africa the poor here have so many more opportunities.

Weird Fashion Trends

Monday, March 31st, 2008

What is the weirdest fashion trend you have ever seen?

The weirdest for me is seeing girls who wear what looks like lingerie over their t-shirts. I guess they are trying to be modest and sexy at the same time but I don’t find that style attractive at all and I have heard many college guys say that they don’t find it attractive either. Most of those guys were married though so I don’t know what the single guys think about it.

Who Need’s Life Insurance?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Anyone who has people who depend on them for financial support should consider purchasing life insurance. There are some reasons why a single person with no children would want life insurance such as if they are caring for aging parents or even if they have excesive debt that they would not want to pass onto their family members should they pass away.

Even with the knowledge of the importance of life insurance we do not have any (we have to work on getting health insurance first. I guess it would not hurt to find out what a life insurance quote would be for us.

High School Boy Arrested For Possession Of Diet Pills

Monday, December 31st, 2007

A Massachusetts woman is suing the town of West Newbury and her then 16 year old sons school over his arrest last year. The arrest occurred after his principal found a plastic bag of ephedra diet pillsin his backpack and called police. Since ephedra is chemically similar to amphetamines the police mistakenly determined the pills to be illegal.

The mother is suing for a total of 5 million dollars. In my opinion this mother is not going to win her case. The school officials and law enforcement officers made an honest mistake and if the courts allow this woman to win her case it will become cause more apprehension from school officials reporting the students that may be possessing illegal drugs.

9 Year Olds In Drug Rehab

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Britain has a big problem with children abusing drugs the Department Of Healt estimates that 1 in 7 children between the ages of 12 and 15 have tried illegal drugs with over 9,000 children between 9 and 15 entering drug rehab programs last year. This issue has played a large part in a United Nations study putting Britain at the bottom of an international table of child well-being. The majority of the children abusing drugs come from broken homes. To me this is a manefestation that the most important thing we can do for our children is to give them a loving stable home.
