Sariah’s 6th Birthday

On Monday last week Sariah turned 6 years old. She is such a wonderful older sister to 3 siblings. She loves to help take care of them and be a good example.

Usually we do 5 school subjects each day, however on her birthday I told her that we would do just 3 and she could choose which ones. She chose Art, Science and German. I also let her choose what we would have for dinner and she decided on waffles, bacon, eggs and orange juice.

That evening we had family home evening where we looked at pictures of Sariah from the day she was born to currently and then we talked about how Sariah’s name means “Princess of the Lord” and what it means to be a princess of the Lord (Keep the commandments, be kind, use good manners, dress modestly etc…)

On Saturday we had a birthday part for Sariah. The little girls came dressed as princesses and they made princess crowns. Here is the cake I made:

It looks a little off because I was using the Betty Crocker recipe and set the oven to 325 but I was using a Duncan Hines cake mix that called for the oven to be at 375 (which I realized after the cakes baked). So the cakes did not rise properly and the doll just fit up to her knees. I used a dixie cup to cover her up from the knees to waist.

4 years ago today I held Rebekah in my arms for the first time. Her birth came with lots of surprises, for some reason I was expecting another Sariah, but no she was the first to teach me that each pregnancy, labour, baby is unique.

First of all I was dreading going to the hospital, my experience with Sariah was awful, however my hospital experience with Rebekah was probably the best I could have ever hoped for in a hospital setting. They didn’t make me get an IV or have any monitors attached to me (just checked the heart rate with the doppler now and again) and after the birth the nurses rarely came in to check on me. I mostly laboured at home, Rebekah was born just about an hour after I arrived at the hospital! This lead me to consider homebirth

When Sariah was born she was a tiny, quiet baby with just a little light fuzz on her head. Bekah was the opposite a big (7lbs 13 oz was big compared to Sariah), screaming baby with a head full of black hair!

In fact Rebekah pretty much screamed for the first 6 weeks, after that she was the happiest little baby.

She is still my little Sunshine, she wants to make people happy and help others. She likes to bring JJ and I glasses of water. She loves her sisters. She always tells Sariah that she is her best friend and likes to help take care of Miriam.

On Saturday we had a birthday party for Rebekah. She was so excited to have a Jasmine cake (Jasmine is her favourite princess) and have friends at her birthday party. Just look at her face while everyone is singing happy birthday!

Bekah got some wonderful presents. Princess dolls, hair bows, clothes from my sister Sara-Jayne and we got her an Ikea train set.

Miriam Is a Year Old!!!

Today is Miriam’s birthday, she is one year old!

She got a Birthday phone call from my twin sister this afternoon who called during her lunch break. Miriam was so excited, she kept yelling hi but she was so tired that she fell a sleep while I was talking to my sister. I noticed that my Dad tried calling from work today as well, so I will need to call my parents sometime today.

JJ’s brothers and two of his cousins that he hadn’t seen for 10 years came over for memorial day so we had a little birthday party. We planned on having a BBQ but it wasn’t the shorts">shorts and t-shirt BBQ kind of weather we expecting so JJ BBQ’d the burgers and hot dogs outside but we ate inside.

I made flower cupcakes with m&m’s for the middle of the flower (m for Miriam) and lemonade mike and ikes for the petals. JJ thought it would be so cute to put the cupcakes in a basket so it could be like a flower basket.

Miriam’s cupcake had a candle with m&m’s. She really had no idea what was going on. After we sang happy birthday and I blew her candle out and gave her the cupcake to eat she just stuck her fingers in the cupcake several times before taking a bite. After the first bite it was gone quickly!

We gave Miriam this toy puppy for her birthday. I admit, I got for free at the preschool registration for Rebekah. Well Miriam really doesn’t like the dog but she loves the tag, which she still plays with today. Sariah, however loves the dog.

I love this picture! I was trying to get a picture of her taking the dog out of the bag but she had to pose for the camera!

Tonight we are going to Arctic Circle for ice cream! We have several free ice cream coupons which makes going out for ice cream even better.

Sariah Is 5!

I now have a 5 year old. Ever since March 1st Sariah has been asking how many days until her birthday. Then last Friday I told her that her birthday was tomorrow so on Saturday morning she woke me up and said “Mom! I’m 5 now!”.

I wasn’t planning on having a party for Sariah since we have a party for her every year and then we just end up doing a family thing for Bekah so we decided that this year we would have a big party for Bekah. Sariah was asking over and over again for a Castle Cake. I told her I had no idea how to make one. She said “all you have to do it put a small square on top of a big square and put frosting on the cones and put that on the squares …. just learn on youtube, mom”. I watched the Castle Cake Video but then she changed her mind to a princess doll cake.

I figured that if I was going to go all out making this princess doll cake we should have a party. Parties are fun so who cares if we give every kid a party each year, right?

Friday evening JJ took Sariah and Rebekah to see Tangled at the dollar theater while I decorated the cake. Here is how it turned out:

The party was a lot of fun and for a last minute party there was a good turn out. Besides our family there were 12 people there.

My Birthday

I realize that I never did blog about my birthday which was almost a month ago. I really enjoyed my birthday this year, we went to Red Robin where I got a free meal and JJ made me a carrot cake, which is one my favourite kinds of cake. My sister got me some mixing bowls, I guess she figured we needed some after visiting a few months ago I also got some money from my in-laws and my parents are sending a cheque as well. Thank you again to all of you!

I tuned 28 and I really don’t feel down at all about getting closer to 30. My parents are in their 50′s and still look young so I am hoping those genes are passed down to me. It would be nice to look young at 50 without anti aging products. But looking young isn’t the most important thing. I am enjoying life and watching my little girls grow up. I am excited about the future, JJ graduating with his doctorates, having more children, going on a mission with JJ one day….
