Still No Computer

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

My computer is still broken so once again I need to go to the library to use the internet which will really stink when we move because we will no longer be in walking distance to the library.

I am sorry to all my blogging friends who I haven’t been able to read your blogs. Rebekah is totally fine at the library just looking at books but Sariah wants to run around or play on the computer and she also insists on wearing panties even though she is still scared of the big potty. I never brought her incontinence supplies, uh, I mean I never put her waterproof training pants or brought the waterproof zipped up bag, both of which I actually designed and made myself and once I have a working computer I will share my patterns with you!

Now that I am finished with my assignments I had to complete online I’ll get back to finishing up our move - all most done!

Raising Confident Girls

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

As I was playing with Sariah I poked her tummy and said you have a big tummy which made her laugh each time I said that. Afterwards I thought about how soon she will start learning about body image and how important it will be for me to help Sariah and Rebekah become confident girls.

I remember when my little sister was only 3 she started to become self concious. One time her friend who was only 5 or 6 asked me if I thought she was pretty, I told her that of course she was and she replied with I hope my friends think I am as well. A friend of mine recently told me that her 3 year old daughter already knows that ‘fat’ is not what she wants to be.

It seems that our little girls constantly see that skinny girls are considered  pretty  and  overhear their moms  talking to other people  about  how they are thinking of taking diet pills or do other things to loose weight or change something about themselves.

For those of you who have older girls, what do you do to help increase their self confidence?

Stressful times

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

There is so much going on right now. We are really busy packing, cleaning and working on the master bedroom in our new house. To top it all off I have cold sore, my second one in two weeks. I don’t understand why I am getting cold sores the last 2 times I have had cold sores were during both of my pregnancies, and the doctor said cold sores are common for pregnant women to get. I also have a big pimple on my nose but I would much rather be dealing with pimple cream than the cold sore cream. Sariah keeps telling me I need to wipe the milk off my lips. Maybe it is caused from the stress associated with moving?

However the thing I am most upset about is that our computer is not working! I have no idea what is wrong with it. This means that I cannot work on my blog or get directions or a phone number or go to cbc.ca to see that Canada still has no olympic medals when ever  I want to.  With all that’s going on  it will be hard for me to go to the library everyday or even know if I should get the internet set up at our new house. Hopefully it starts working, I don’t want to buy a new computer just yet.

Oh Wow!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

When we got our daughters pictures taken we went to a Kiddie Kandid studio that was in a mall. This was our first time in a long time going to a mall so 2 year old Sariah had never been to a mall since she was a little baby. After parking I took her out of her car seat, the first thing she seemed to notice were the restaurants by the mall because she said “we go eat?”. After reminding her that she already ate dinner we went into the mall and for the first 10 minutes she just kept saying “oh wow! lights!” pointing to lights and digital signage and “oh wow! Water” pointing to water fountains. 12 month old Bekah joined in by pointing and saying “ooooo”

I will have to take them back to the mall again, they loved it!

America Is Not The Most Obese Nation

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

In a nation that use their treadmills as book shelves and lives on take out and convenience food. Many Americans (and other countries) give themselves the status of the most obese country in the world. A recent European study recently showed Australia as being the most obese country, however I could not find anywhere how this study was conducted so I do not trust the research. Many other studies I looked at did not have recent statistics for all the countries they showed. For example some countries had 2003 data while others had 2008 data.

I decided to find out how the World Health Organization rates obesity by country. According to a study conducted last year the United States ranks as #9, not surprisingly most of the top 10 countries are from the South Pacific. Australia ranks at #21 while my nationality, Canada ranks at #35 right after Mongolia #34  (where JJ lived for 2 years). View the entire list here. I doubt that Australia has surpassed the US by 12 places in one year but we will have to wait for the next WHO study to see what they say.

The bottom 5 on the list Sri Lanka, Viet Nam, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Eritrea would probably choose obesity over starving.

Quite A Week

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

I haven’t been blogging for the last few days because my parents and sisters were in town visiting from British Columbia. As always it was an adventure. It seems like things never go as planned but it was definitly a fun week though. We were able to show them the house we are buying and we had a birthday party for Rebekah where JJ’s brother and sister-in-law were also able to come to. We went to a water park and had a little bbq, it became very windy soon before we were going to eat the cake so we all went back to our apartment to eat the cake. It was a good cake, me and my 14 year old sister made it and JJ decorated it.  Rebekah loved the presents she recieved, a baby doll from us, a basket and toy food (that she took into the bath with her that evening) from Uncle Stephen and Aunt Kristina. My sister, Sara-Jayne got her an adorable dress. My parents got a wagon for both Sariah and Rebekah wich they don’t really care about right now because it is still in the box but they will love it once we take it out and they can play with it.  One of my favourite things we did was go to a Dinosaur museum in Lehi, Utah they had so much to do that we never did get to everything.

Sariah was perfectly well the day after she became sick and had a fever of 101, however Rebekah became sick the day after and then JJ the day after that. I haven’t gotten sick yet so hopefully our family illness is over with! I was really worried about my husband his fever was 102.6 and he felt really cold and was shivering. I made sure he took ibuprofen and rested, he said he felt like his head was swelling up but it felt better when put a ball cap on because of the pressure. Gratefully he is just fine now.

We Never Planned For This

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Yesterday my family came here to Utah from British Columbia to visit us which I have been looking forward to a while and so has Sariah, who just loves to be with family members. For the last few days she had been talking about them. However, yesterday morning she was woken up at 9:30 by Rebekah banging on her bedroom door and she was tired and quiet all morning. She never ate breakfast and after her bath while I was cutting her finger nails she fell asleep on my lap so I put her back to bed where she slept until she was woken up by my two little sisters who ran into her room to “see if she was awake”. Even after these two extra hours of sleep she still acted very tired and never ate lunch.

My dad wanted to check out some hotels in the area so I went with him to act as a navigator and my twin sister came as well. We left the babies with my mom and sisters. After my dad booked a hotel we headed back to my apartment where an elderly woman drove into my Dad’s SUV. There is a bad dent and scrape but no one was hurt and it was just a low impact crash. We were just happy that my youngest sister never came with us because her booster seat was by the door that was hit. We were waiting outside in the unbearable heat for an hour for the police to show up. Hopefully everything works well for my dad, he is trying to sell it and actually just re-insured it for an extra month just before coming down here.

Back to Sariah, I took her temperature later on in the day while at the hotel and she had a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit. I gave her some children’s Ibuprofen and she fell asleep at the hotel. We decided to leave her there for the night since the hotel room is a lot cooler than our apartment which will probably be good for her. I hope she is better today, this is only her 3rd time ever being sick and it is just awful seeing my usually happy girl be so miserable.

Update On The House

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

The beginning of this week we learned that we now wont qualify for the house until JJ recieves his first pay check from his grad program stipend and after not being able to get a co-signer we met with the seller and real estate agents to work out a lease to own deal. So we will end up having to pay more for the house but at least we don’t have to go look for another apartment since we need to be out of this one soon. The apartment we are living in is a male student apartment complex, since a lot of students don’t attend school over the summer they open up some of the apartments for families over the summer.

The only downside to buying this house is that my husband wont be able to walk to school and we only have 1 car. He is thinking of getting a bike but I don’t think it’s going to be easy to bike to school when it is snowing.

Video Of Rebekah Walking!

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Rebekah surprised me by walking the day before she turned 10 months old. She was with me in Relief Society (A class at church for women 18 and older) standing up with her hands on my lap. She was smiling at the toddlers who were walking around and then took 3 steps towards the toddlers! She is now 11 months old and walking better each day. Here is a video that was taken a few days ago and even now she is walking better than she did in this video.

There Is Nothing To Eat

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Before leaving for work JJ complained that there was nothing to eat. After I listed off all the things that he could make for lunch he just replied with “there is no bread”. I just finished making some bread so he can have “something to eat” for lunch tomorrow. He deserves it, he really is a hard worker, working two jobs this summer. Sometimes his hard working mindset leads him to do things he’s not supposed to though. Like when he was the Orkin man in North Carolina, he would destroy wasps nests on peoples roofs for them even though he didn’t have NC health insurance coverage. This did help him with his College Pro painter job last summer though, he was the only worker who would go on the roofs and his willingness to work hard gave him the assistant manager position.

Luckily he doesn’t do anything dangerous this summer!

The Terrific And Terrible Two’s Are Here

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Sariah has now been two for almost 3 months and up until now she has always been a perfect baby. She didn’t cry much as a baby and she has always been so easy going and friendly with everyone.

Now I am having to deal with something I haven’t before - she purposely disobeys me! Usually when she does this she either goes in the corner or her crib for a time out, I really don’t like the idea of spanking. But I must admit that yesterday after we returned from a walk I took the girls on, I took them both out of the stroller. While I carried Bekah up the stairs to our apartment Sariah walked beside me. Well Sariah turned around and started to run like crazy into the road laughing. The closer I got to her running after her telling her to stop the more she laughed. Yes, I did spank her for that! I held onto her arm and practically dragged her to the apartment explained to her why it was so wrong for her to that and gave her a time out. I felt bad afterwards seeing the mark on her arm and bottom but her skin is so sensitive. She has her daddy’s skin where just a light back scratch will look like a bear attacked them. Hopefully she has daddy’s facial skin when she’s a teenager, though then she won’t need to worry about acne treatments. Now that we are almost finished our toddler unit on zoo animals maybe I should start a unit on safety next!

In so many ways Sariah is a wonderful two year old. She is so good at being ‘a little mommy’ to Bekah, she is doing so well at using the potty while at home, she is amazingly intelligent and she is just so cute and sweet. She always tells me she loves me. It is those things that still make me believe she is the best two year old in the world.

Our Home Inspection

Monday, June 16th, 2008

We got the house we are moving into inspected, we used Watch Dogs Home Inspectors. I would recommend this home inspection company, the inspector was very thorough telling us everything that needed to be repaired, maintained and even made us aware of things that we may want to change. We were also emailed a detailed report of the inspection with pictures of the problem areas and links to how to repair those things. Just about all of the things are minor and the inspector says that the house is in great condition.

The two things we are going to be sure to do before we move in is remove the bedroom ceilings (which we were told may contain asbestos materials) and put up new ceiling. The current owner has done this to the rest of the house and said that he would help my husband do the bedrooms as well as other repair projects.

Next we will need to choose a company for our home insurance. I have talked with several already and it sounds like our home insurance will be around $400 a year - Utah has the second lowest home insurance rate while Idaho has the lowest. The insurance companies I have talked with so far encouraged me to buy life insurance as well so someone else wont be left with all of our mortgage if we die. This website sells cheap life insurance policies from as low as $3.27 a month.
