Buy A Blizzard For The Children’s Miracle Network

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Tomorrow all proceeds that Dairy Queen makes off their Blizards will be going to the Children’s Miracle Network. What better way to enjoy a blizzard than to eat it knowing that you are helping children all over North America. So go ahead and indulge yourself, don’t worry about all the calories and sugar - it will probably make you feel better than the best diet pill anyways.

Visit Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day website to read some success stories and make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Join The Memory Walk

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Last year I blogged about the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. I was not able to join the walk because there were no walks anywhere close to where I lived in Idaho but now that I live in Utah there is a walk in Salt Lake City which is only 45 minutes away. My husband, JJ and I have decided to start our own team in memory of JJ’s grandfather who passed away 3 years ago due to alzheimers.

It only took me a few minutes to start our own team In Memory Of Colonel Lee If you live close to Salt Lake City please join our team. The walk is on Saturday September 6th, 2008 at Creekside Park. Even if you can’t join our team please leave a donation, even $1 will help find a cure! Our team goal is to raise $500. If you would like to donate via paypal just let me know and you can send me the money to my email address and I will then make the donation on your behalf.

This is such an important cause, Alzheimers is the 6th leading cause of death in the US and such an awful way to die. No one wants their loved ones last memory of them to be someone who did not know who they were.

Help Save Serena

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Serena is a 3 year old girl from Britain who has been fighting neuroblastoma for 18 months. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the nerve cells. Most people who are diagnosed with this cancer are younger that 5 years old. Serena’s doctors have said that there is nothing more they can do to cure her but there is a in New York that offers another treatment. Serena’s parents are asking for everyone’s help in raising $250,000. Hopefully the hospital will allow them to go ahead with the treatments and then bill them later. If you would like to help please click on the widget below or visit the Help Save Serena blog.

Donate A Boat For Charity

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Today I learned about a charitable organization called Boat Angel that is asking for boat donations. They will pick up used boats (whether or not they run) for free and use the money from the sales (that they sell in auctions) to give to a charity. They have a long list of approved charities they support that you can find on boatangel.org and those donating boats can also request a charity they would like the proceeds to go to. Please visit Boat Angel’s youtube site to see the videos they make for children and teens with some of the donations they recieve.

I think this is a great idea for those who want to get rid of old boats but not have to deal with the hassel of selling it.

Courtney’s Ride For The Cure

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

mikayla200709s.jpgTwo months ago my sister (pictured) who just turned 8 years old last week was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She is one of millions who live with diabetes and wish that someone would find a cure.  Courtney is trying to something about that. Next week she will be participating in her 3rd Tour De Cure which is fundraiser to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

This is a cause that is important to Courtney as she also has diabetes, she was diagnosed when she was 11 years old and has had to overcome some challenges to be able  to become as athletic as she is today. Courtney is riding 31 miles and is donating each mile to someone who has diabetes, little Mikayla is one of those 31 people! Courtney’s  goal is to raise $1,000 for her ride and has currently raised $500. If you would like to support her and/or find out more about her ride you can visit her website at www.ridetoremedy.com.

World Alzheimer’s Day

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Alzheimer’s is a disease that attacks the brain and causes people to have severe memory loss and confusion. It affects about 1 in 10 people over the age of 65. With alzheimer’s being that common it is likely that many of you have seen a loved one suffer from Alzheimers. We can all do our part to help find a cure for Alzheimers and ways to help its sufferers live a more fulfilling life.

September 21st is world Alzheimer’s Day and actionalz.org is encouraging people to host a “Purple Party” to help raise awareness about Alzheimers and also to help generate donations to continue research on finding a cure. All donations made in september will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to one million dollars by The Harrah’s Foundation. It sure would be wonderful if everyone together could raise two million dollars for the fight against Alzheimer’s!

Actionalz.org has Purple Party ideas to help you start your party planning. If you commit to raising at leat $150 at your party you can recieve a free party planning kit or host a round to remember golf event and recieve a free golf kit.

Celebrate World Alzheimers Day by throwing a fun party for your family and friends. Everyone loves to be invited to a party!

Challenge Completed!

Monday, September 17th, 2007

65722.jpgIn a previous post I challenged myself to use the next $25 I earned from blogging to lend to someone to help them start a business in a developing country from Kiva.org.

The person I chose is Esther who lives in Nigeria and runs a restaurant business. Once I am paid back I look forward to helping someone else.

The Kiva Challenge

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Kiva - loans that change lives
Kiva.org is a unique charity where you don’t donate money to the poor but lend money to people in developing countries to help them start businesses. Over 99% of loans are repaid and Kiva puts that money back into your account when the lender pays the loan back. Imagine how many people you can help with the same $25!

I am challenging myself and other bloggers to register an account on kiva.org and then with the next $25 you recieve from blogging to add that money to your Kiva account and help someone in a developing country support themselves. Or With the next $5 you make give Kiva a donation to help them support the charity and find more people. You can do both if you want!

If you want to take this challenge please send me a message and I will add you to the list!

Walk For Alzheimer’s

Friday, August 10th, 2007

More than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, a disease that causes people to have severe memory loss and confusion, it also has a negative effect on their personality and behaviour. It is often extremely difficult for loved ones to see someone with Alzheimer’s change this drastically and many times forget who they are. My husband took care of his grandfather who suffered from Alzheimer’s for several months. It was difficult for both my husband and his dad for my husbands grandfather to not who they were, however he always knew who is wife was and how special she was to him. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, however there are treatments, services and support that can help to make the suffers life better. There is a way to help organizations provide these things as well as provide funds to help researchers find a cure such as the nations largest fundraising event - The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk .The Memory Walk is currently looking for volunteers across the United States to sign up as Team Captains and walkers to help raise awareness and funds for those with alzheimers and also for support and research. Unfortuanatly there are no walks within 100 miles from where I live. I think it would be really cool to be a Team Captain
for the memory walk with all the tools and tips they provide them with. The team captains also get their own website that they can use as a fundraising headquarters. Make sure to sign up early if you want to be a team captain. You can also win great prizes if you raise over $500. The grand prize is a trip for two to Las Vegas.

Check out the site to find out if there are walks in your area and other ways to get involved.

Oprah’s School

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Did anyone else watch the Oprah special called “Building a Dream”?

It was about the school that she built in South Africa that will allow over 100 under girls to recieve a good education. These girls live in poverty and have been through far worse than most of us have been through. I thought that this documentary was so inspiring and I hope that teachers and parents will take the time to show their children this documentary. Many children in western countries don’t value their education as much as they should, I hope this documentary will help them to be more greatful for what they have.

Oprah and the Angel Network is working towards building more schools to educate impoverished women and children around the world. To find out more about the school in Africa and how you can help with building more schools go here.

Hats For Newborns

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

If you know how to crochet or knit and would like to do some service then you can make hats for newborns and help save their lives. “Four million newborns die each year within the first month of life half within the first 24 hours of life.” This number could be lowered with keeping babies heads warm. This would be a fun thing to do with a group of people!
