I received a free Seventh Generation disinfectant cleaning kit (pictured above) and the Conscious Kitchen book from MyBlogSpark along with product information. MyBlogSpark will also give a free Seventh Generation cleaning kit to one of my readers. Details about the giveaway is at the end of  this post. The giveaway is open to residents of the USA and Canada!

The Review

The first product I tried was the disinfecting wipes which I found great for wiping toys, laundry baskets and the toilet. I mainly use the all purpose cleaner to clean my kitchen table, counter top and high chair. The bathroom cleaner left my bathtub/shower and sink looking very clean and smelling great.

Seventh Generation’s new line of botanical disinfectant cleaners uses Thyme oil which comes from the thyme herb and kills 99.9% of germs naturally. The cleaners are also scented with lemongrass. I really like the smell of this product  however my husband thinks the smell is too strong.

The product cleans just as well as other cleaning products I use but I feel better about cleaning with Seventh Generation’s disinfectant products than those with toxic chemicals, especially while being pregnant. I cleaned with my Seventh Generation kit without using gloves and it did not irritate my skin and usually my skin is sensitive to cleaning products.

The paper towels are unbleached using 100% recycled paper. They are good quality, strong paper towels.

I love the book that was included in the kit. Alexandra Zissu’s book the Conscious Kitchen is a great resource for making your own natural cleaning solutions, learning which common household chemicals are the most dangerous and why, saving energy and eating a locally grown food even in the winter.

Green tip: Instead of using paper towels, I got some of the Scott washable “paper towels”. They are fabric but aren’t as thick as washrags. So when I don’t want to get my washrags nasty on spaghetti sauce and stuff, I use these washable paper towels because I don’t care if they get nasty and ugly. I used to use paper towels. Since the switch I’ve bought paper towels 3 or 4 times less much.

I recycle the usual and the unusual. For example we reuse our heavier paper plates ~ for many rounds before we throw them out ~ In fact, I often times have to put things in the recycle bin pickup (jars, containers, etc) just because I already have too many cleaned, and stockpiled.

Instead of buying lots and lots of bottled water, use a bottle that you can refill with water. You’ll save on lots of bottles and still quench your thirst!

    Re-using household items.

Instead of buying lounge pillows for my son’s room and the living room, we make them out of t-shirts.

Instead of buying squirt guns in the summer, we save dish detergent bottles and use them to squirt water etc.

I don’t use paper towels for cleaning. Cheap cotton wash clothes from the Dollar Store can be reused again & again & actually end up costing a fraction of paper towels in the long run.

We have switched from paper to cloth napkins – I even sewed up some small ones for the boys! It doesn’t really add very much to the laundry since they are so small.
