Organizing Coupons With A Binder

PhotobucketI have had several people ask me how I organize my coupons. The best way that I have found to organize for myself it to use a binder with baseball card holders.

I bought this binder at a thrift store for $1 and it is perfect. It has a zipper pocket at the front where I can keep things like scissors. On the left side of the opening there is a big pocket where I keep the store fliers and two smaller pockets for large sized coupons and my calculator.

I then have my coupons divided by categories. This is great for when I see something really cheap at the store or on clearance and I know that I have a coupon for it, I just flip over to that item’s category! What’s also lots of fun is if I notice an item in some one else shopping cart and I know I’m probably not going to buy that product I will give the coupon to that person.

The categories I use are: Free/Rebates, Grains, Meats, Dairy, Fruits/Vegetables, Drinks, Canned/Boxed meals, Snacks, Baking/Condiments, Beauty/Hygiene, Health, Cleaning, Paper/Plastics, Miscellaneous, Restaurants.

I don’t file every single coupon though. I don’t have pets so I put all my pet food coupons into an envelope to give to friends who have cats and dogs. For things like Coffee and weight loss supplements I just don’t cut out at all.

My least favourite thing about the binder method when I first started using it was having to go through it every month to throw away all the expired coupons. So right now all the pages that have tabs have a variety of expiry dated coupons but after that all the coupons are October, November is on a different page etc… That way on November first I don’t have to look at every single coupon for the expiry date, I just pull out all the ‘October’ pages and throw those coupons away.
