My Garden Can Grow More Than Zucchini’s!

Last week I was feeling like a failure, our grass died, our flower garden was a bunch of dying tulip leaves and it seemed that the only thing our vegetable garden could grow was zucchini – I love zucchini but I was hoping for more variety.
Well this weekend we dug up the potato plant and found that we had potatoes and today I noticed that some of our tomatoes are turning red! We ate the potatoes yesterday and now I’m excited for tomatoes – I’m going to make myself a tomato and cheese sandwich with the first tomato I pick!

The potatoes are small but it’s something!
We are pulling out all the leaves in the flower garden and will plant new flowers. Now this isn’t actually our fault – the previous owners, we were told just threw in a bunch of bulbs.
The biggest job of all is we are growing new grass. I went to the Walmart garden center and I actually spoke with someone who was very knowledgeable and helpful – for the first time I was impressed with Walmart! He gave me a paper that he wrote about lawn care and helped me pick out affordable grass seeds, fertilizer and a sprinkler. He said that if we fertilize 5 times a year (April Fools day, Memorial day, 4th of July, Labour day and Halloween) then we wont have weed problems and the grass will look nice all year round. We are working in sections of the yard and since we added fertilizer to the section we are working on this week we won’t have to fertilize until the end of October. I’ll have to send myself Halloween invitations to remind me to fertilize the grass!
Hopefully next summer we will have a nicer looking, more successful yard.

Whoo-hoo!
Though small but hey, its a great start! Very soon, tomatoes and potatoes will be out of your grocery list. *wink*

Way to go!! I’m just playing with gardening for the first time this year, and had opposite results on the zucchini… all of mine died, and my tomatoes are just scraping by, while my peppers are thriving. Next year I really want to try potatoes too…
