Recovering At Home

My mom was hoping to come down to take care of Sariah while Rebekah was having surgery and to help me out but she had some issues with renewing her US Visa so she was not able to come down. I don’t understand why the US Government gives her such a hard time when there are plenty of ‘criminals’ that they should be making more difficult to cross the border. She was told that if she becomes a Canadian Citizen she won’t need a visa to cross the border anymore. Hopefully she gets that soon.

Fortunately JJ’s brother and sister-in-law agreed to babysit at the last minute. Sariah loves being with them and this morning she excitedly brought up several times how her uncle played Computer Games with her.

PhotobucketWhen we first walked into the hospital at 11am we passed by the cafeteria and Bekah said “yay! eat yum yums”. Poor little girl was starving as she hadn’t eaten since 10:30 the night before. We went to the day surgery area and registered. Bekah said again that she wanted to eat yum yum’s and the registration people all felt sorry for her. The lady who registered us name was Rebekah as well!

We then went with a nurse to put a hospital gown on her and get some vitals taken. The nurse asked us if we wanted Rebekah to have some oral sedation so she would go to sleep and not cry when the anesthesiologist took her. We declined as we did not want her to be more medicated than necessary. I was also happy that I never choose to have her sedated because in the pre-op waiting area the only grown-up magazines were in Spanish so we passed time by playing toys with Rebekah and reading books to her.

Her surgery was delayed by two hours as her surgeon had an emergency surgery to attend to. There are several pediatric gastric surgeons at the hospital but Bekah’s surgeon is the main appendectomy surgeon. I talked to the surgeon for a bit right before he went to prepare for Bekah’s surgey and soon after two anesthesiologists came to get her. The two men played with her for bit and then JJ suggested they get a wagon so they could give her a ride to the operating room, they agreed and she loved the wagon ride and never cried when she left us. So that made me feel better.

We then went to a different waiting area where we read parenting magazines, ate our peaches and pringles we brought with us and watched “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”. Two hours later the surgeon came in and asked said that he wanted to speak with us in the consultation room. I became very nervous as I thought that room was for bad news. The surgeon must have noticed because he quickly said everything went perfect and he just wanted to explain some things. He told us that there was still a lot of inflammation and that the two abscesses that were left of her appendix were removed as well as the little ball of stool that blocked the appendix and caused all those problems. I read theories that say that high fiber diets lessen people’s chances of appendicitis but Rebekah does have a lot of fiber in her diet and has never had a problem with constipation. My kids poo a lot! At least Sariah goes in the potty just one child’s dirty diapers to change. I guess the breastfeed, oatmeal, fruits and vegetables can be considered colon cleansing foods :)

I still feel guilty about Rebekah’s appendicitis but I understand that it is a mom thing to feel guilty about everything and I am not going to dwell on it. I’ll just be happy that it is taken care of and she is perfectly happy and healthy.

PhotobucketAbout half an hour after we spoke with the surgeon the receptionist told us that one parent could go see Rebekah. So I went to the post-op area and held her for a bit. She was very sleepy and making weird breathing noises which the nurse said was normal. We were then moved to our recovery room and soon after JJ was aloud in. We were told that if she starts to feel better in the evening we could go home that night. We were happy about that as there is always that risk of infection and catching illnesses at a hospital. There was a little room in the recovery area that had food for the patients and family. We ate a lot of ‘free’ food. Slurpees, jello, pudding, crackers, cheese and macaroni and cheese – nothing particularly healthy! We also watched a lot of TV, not much else to do. At about 7pm Bekah began talking to us and keeping food down. The first thing she said was “mama I got owie beet (feet)” – the IV was in her foot. At 9pm we were discharged.

She went in this cute little wagon to the car.

As you can tell she was in a lot of pain. She still is but she has been eating perfectly normal and even tried climbing up the shelves in Sariah’s bedroom today. Yep, she’s recovering quickly!
