Preparing For Surgery
May

The wait for Rebekah’s appendectomy is coming to a close. Tomorrow Rebekah will go into the Children’s Hospital for surgery.
To be honest I am really nervous. I am happy that her infection is gone and she is very healthy so that makes her highly unlikely to have any complications but reading the list of possible side effects that the hospital gave us would make any parent nervous. I am more nervous about the general anesthesia that she will be getting rather than the surgery (which will be laparoscopic).
Another reason is that I feel helpless. I borrowed Franklin Goes To The Hospital from the library. In the book Franklin the turtle gets an operation but the only thing she cared about was Franklin’s toy puppy that was shown on each page. I tried telling her about what is going to happen but she is just too young to understand. I also feel helpless that I am not going to be able to be there to reasure her during the Surgery. I will be staying overnight with her at the hospital. Hopefully she is able to eat tomorrow night because the best way for me to comfort is by nursing her. Kind of makes me glad she has not completely weaned yet!
However I do have some good news. It looks like we will not have to pay any of the hospital bills. With the current bills and estimated surgery costs we are currently responsible for paying $5,000 – yeah, we don’t have the best insurance but we don’t pay for it either, it comes with JJ’s graduate stipend – anyways we were given a few different options for financial assistance and we were told that we will likely qualify so that is a blessing!
Even if we do end up having to pay the $5,000 I will at least be grateful that we have insurance or else we would have ended up having to pay like $20,000. This reminds me that we still have to look up term insurance quotes and add earthquake coverage to our home insurance.
