The Start Of Our Garden

PhotobucketIt has been a great week so far. I finally got around to starting on my first ever quilt and we started on our first ever garden! We started the garden on Monday for family home evening (FHE).

JJ started our FHE off by giving a lesson on seeds. He talked about things that grow from seeds and then talked about faith. He did a good job at gearing the lesson for Sariah and Rebekah.

Our activity was planting our garden. We got spinach, tomato, bell pepper, green bean and pea seeds. I am so excited to start a garden and be able to eat this food that we are growing. It will also be such a great learning tool for the kids to help plant the seeds, watch the vegetables grow and then harvest the vegetables.

Rebekah tried to eat the seeds and got upset that we weren’t going to let her eat them so we had to give her a banana.

After the planting was over JJ, Sariah and Rebekah drew pictures of the vegetables. JJ is going to laminate them at school and we are going to tape Popsicle sticks on them on and use them for our plant markers!

I want to buy a strawberry bush, blueberry bush and a peach tree as well. Walmart has peach trees for $20. It would take about 3 years for it to bear fruit but at least we could enjoy peaches for two years and it would increase the value of the house. It’s a good thing we are not moving soon our neighborhood looks kind of bad with almost every house up for sale. Instead of buying commercial real estate someone could buy up all the houses and build condo’s! But I know my former neighbors but a lot of work into their houses so I don’t think they will settle for as little as what a construction company would buy for.

We finished our lesson off by showing the children popcorn seeds, then popping them for our treat!

You’re growing spinach? Home-grown spinach is one of the best foods in the world, imo, but it dies from the summer heat here in AZ. I am green with envy. ;-)
