Two years ago as part of one of my child development classes I became certified to perform the Denver ll test which is a developmental screening test for newborns to children aged 6.

While unpacking I found my testing kit and thought it would be fun to see how my kids compare with other kids their age. They both performed at or above age level for each category, I wasn’t surprised because I already know they are smart :) The categories are Personal-Social, Fine Motor – Adaptive (these are small body movements such as hand coordination, drawing and stacking blocks), Language and Gross Motor (which are large body movements such as walking, jumping and balancing). I was also not surprised at what their strongest points were as Bekah talks a lot for her age (language) and Sariah is amazing at drawing shapes and letters (fine-motor).

Here were Sariah’s (32 months old) ranking of her strongest areas:

  • Fine Motor (ranked higher than most 39 month olds)
  • Gross Motor (ranked higer than most 36 month olds)
  • Personal-Social (ranked at top 25% of age level)
  • Language (ranked at top 50% of age level)

Rebeka’s ( 16 months old) were totally opposite:

  • Language (ranked higer than most 24 month olds)
  • Personal -Social (ranked higher than most 19 month olds)
  • Gross Motor (ranked higher than most 17 month olds)
  • Fine Motor (ranked at top 75% of age group)

This may not be the best way to test your childs developmental skills but the test includes fun activities for the kids so they just felt like they were playing with me, not being tested.
