We were only in our last place a year and didn't receive back ANY of our $1300 deposit. And we even paid extra to be able to move in right away without credit woes, didn't get any of it back. The place before that upon our application and writing the check for the $500 deposit they flat out told us that the "deposit" was 100% nonrefundable and would go into the overall maintenance fund. At least they were honest about it instead of making up crap fake reasons not to give us back the deposit. A lot of places don’t even bother to give ANYONE their deposit back no matter how long they live there.

Our apartment was disgusting when we moved in and I had cleaned it well. (I admit not totally spotless but a whole lot cleaner than when we moved in) so we will fight them if we get a cleaning bill. A friend and I scrubbed the refrigerator to perfection but got a bill for $30 because of a "dirty refrigerator". I called back and fought it. They said they took pictures and I said I wanted proof.
