Rent Deposit Woes
When my husband and I moved out of our first apartment the manager was so impressed with how well we cleaned the apartment that he gave us our entire deposit back. We even ran into the manager at walmart and he told us that he had never seen someone clean the apartment as well as we did. We were of course happy and figured that getting deposists back from apartment managers was easy.
However out of the other 6 apartments we’ve lived in we have only been satisfied with one other apartment in regards to recieving our deposit back. Twice we had to break our contracts because we had to move for JJ’s internships and once I was 9.5 months pregnant and I had women from church say that they were going to help clean the apartment but no one came and I was way too uncomfortable to do a good job cleaning. With all those circumstances we didn’t deserve much of our deposit back but I am nervous about recieving our deposit back from the last apartment because I feel that the manager is not a very honest person.
We should have recieved this deposit back last week. I called the manager two days ago who said that she sent it out last week, I guess I’ll find out which date it was sent out when I recieve it. I have met a lot of people who have said that this manager will often make stuff up to give you back as little of the deposit as possible so I really don’t know what to expect.
I searched Summerhays apartments online and I had a good laugh at what people were saying about the apartment. The funniest comment to me was the person who mentioned that the shower faucets were designed for people 5 foot and under. JJ is only 5′6 and was always complaining about how low the faucet was.
This is another reason to hope that we are able to buy this house so we don’t have to deal with leases anymore. We are actually staying in the same city for at least 7 years!

Nice to hear that you get the deposit back. I understand that having our own home is very crucial. I hope you’ll have your own soon.

Sometimes you have to fight them. A friend and I scrubbed the refrigerator to perfection but got a bill for $30 because of a “dirty refrigerator”. I called back and fought it. They said they took pictures and I said I wanted proof. They then suddenly said they lost the pictures.

Amber, that is awful that they lied like that. Our apartment was disgusting when we moved in and I had cleaned it well. (I admit not totally spotless but a whole lot cleaner than when we moved in) so we will fight them if we get a cleaning bill.

A lot of places don’t even bother to give ANYONE their deposit back no matter how long they live there.
We were only in our last place a year and didn’t receive back ANY of our $1300 deposit. And we even paid extra to be able to move in right away without credit woes, didn’t get any of it back.
The place before that upon our application and writing the check for the $500 deposit they flat out told us that the “deposit” was 100% nonrefundable and would go into the overall maintenance fund. At least they were honest about it instead of making up crap fake reasons not to give us back the deposit.
