Learning To Only Grocery Shop Twice A Month
Sep
23
To save money on groceries and gas we decided to grocery shop twice a month. So far we have not been able to stick with that schedule. We were doing well this month, we have only made two trips to Costco and Walmart but now we have no lactose free milk (for Sariah and Bekah) and less than one teaspoon of children’s ibuprofen. Sariah has some molars coming through and complains about it a lot so the ibuprofen is a must. It will be grocery trip #3 today. Once we have been limiting our grocery shoppin to two days a month for a while longer we will get a better idea of how much food we need to buy. It saves us gas of course but I don’t think it saves us money. We spend between $130 – $150 a month on groceries. For a family of four, I don’t think we can spend any less than that without going hungry. For people who feel that they overspend may find that they save a lot of money only grocery shopping twice a month.
How many days a month do you grocery shop?

We do our grocery shopping every Saturday for the upcoming week. Most weeks we do pretty good not spending more than we need to, but some (like last week) we buy more than we need to.

I make my menu for 2 weeks. So we spend on average $85-$90 every two weeks. HOWEVER, I do need to go in between those weeks because of things that would go bad if I bought 2 weeks worth. Lindsay takes her lunch daily, and while it is cheaper than buying school lunch, it means I have to go to the store to buy the things we consume daily. Stuff like bread, fruit, snacks for lunches, ham, cheese, milk, eggs.

I’m ashamed to say this, we don’t cook as much as we SHOULD, so going grocery happens only when the supply is running low for stuff like boys’ milk powders or washing detergent and shampoo…

Twice a month to Costco and about once a week to a regular grocery store. I do have a goal to plan my meals so I don’t have to go as often but it’s still a work in progress.

I try so hard to do the twice a month grocery shopping. This month I am doing ok but I had to go to the drug store to buy medicine for myself. I try to go to the commissary once a month and then once a month to a regular grocery store. Sometimes I add in an international grocery store visit every other week.

I’m impressed that you only spend $150 a month to feed four people! My problem is I run in “just” for milk or bread, and come out with ten other things

Elizabeth, I guess spending less that $150 a month is a little misleading because we do get milk, eggs and cheese free from the WIC program.

Wow! You must find good deals to spend do little- that’s great! I go grocery shopping every Thursday after the sale flyers come out and go to Sams once a month or so. We budget $100/ week for groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries etc. The cost of food really adds up!
