Don’t Solve The Drug Problem With More Drugs!

Vancouver, BC really is a very pretty city with a lot for families to do but if you ever go to Vancouver you will want to stay away from the Downtown Eastside which is the most disgusting place I have ever seen. It is the home of North America’s first needle exchange program, which gives out clean needles to drug users to ‘keep them safe and cut down on infections’. I am not going to quote any statistics of the success of this program because each study I have looked at has a different outcome so I don’t trust any of these studies. Of course the people who are for it are going to come up with a study that shows the HIV rate has declined while those who are against the program will say that almost 50% of the drug users in the program are HIV positive. People can use statistics to prove anything they want!

One fact is that you cannot solve the drug problem with “encouraging” drug use.  Police officers hate the situation and the increased crime rate to the area.

In my opinion those using illegal drugs should go to a drug rehab centre far away from Vancouver and after they complete their stay, they should start a new life in a different city with good support and new friends.

Of course, a needle exchange programme is cheaper than putting thousands of people in rehab all at once. Sure would make the Eastside more pleasant though.

Seems that they try to solve a problem but not go to the root. It won’t solve drugs problm at all I think.

It’s like what the Chinese idiom say, “If you want to kill the plant, you must pluck out the entire thing, not sparing the roots.”

I agree….how does that fix the drug problem? It’s encouraging it, I think.

Kim, I agree a needle exchange program is cheaper but in my opinion it is counter productive if Vancouver is trying to reduce it’s drug use and crime rate.

Oh, I am not saying it’s better. I am just saying it’s cheaper, and may be the reason they decided to go that route.
