I want to cancel my cell phone plan soon and get maybe get a VOIP plan that has unlimited USA and Canada calling. I am looking into trying Vonage which is $25 per month compared to my 300 minutes, $30 per month cell phone bill and we can call our families whenever we want (including to Canada!) and not have to worry about how many minutes we have left.

Has anyone tried Vonage or a similar plan? I would like to know what other peoples experiences are before signing a contract.

Horaayy..there are 7 comment(s) for me so far ;)

My mom has Vonage and really likes it. We had Packet8 and liked it as well.

We have Vonage, and I *love* it. Love with a capital L O V E. I recommend it very highly. I will never go back to a regularly landline again, I will forever have Vonage. Feel free to email me with any questions.

The only reason we haven’t gotten a landline is because you can’t take it with you. lol. With a cell phone you get to use it if are running late, or are out and need to call a doctor, or an emergency #. That’s what keeps me with a cell phone.

I had Vonage a few years ago and my calls kept getting dropped so I switched. Maybe it was just my area though that was having problems.

I have Skype.com and I love it! I believe its free to try, or maybe a nominal charge, depending on the features you choose? IIRC, I only pay $25 every three months, but they also have a $10 a month plan or something like that.
The main thing to remember is that you can’t trust any VOIP service for 911 calls. If you’re planning on getting rid of your landline, then you may want to keep your old cell phone on the charger at all times, in case you have to make an emergency call. Some people don’t know this, but you can always dial 911 on any cell, even if the cell is no longer part of any cell network.

Oh, I almost forgot.. a friend of mine has a Magic Jack, and he loves it. I think? it’s something like $50 up front and then $20 a year afterwards. Here’s the website, I couldn’t see the prices right off the bat, and I didn’t want to watch the videos. :-)

Thank you for the advice Dana, I will be sure to keep our cell phone after we cancel the account!
