Some hotels are pulling Bibles from hotel rooms “to cut down on costs (to provide things like ipod docking stations and goldfish) and avoid offending people”. I am pretty sure the Gideons give their bibles to hotels free of charge so that is not a very good reason. I also don’t understand why people would be offended to see a bible in a drawer in their hotel room, they don’t need to read it. I certainly would not be offended if I saw a Koran or other religious literature in my hotel room. A apartment I lived in always had Jehovah’s Witness magazines in the laundry room and although I am not Jehovah’s Witness I didn’t mind, I even read the magazines sometimes while waiting for my laundry.
Albert Mohler, President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary had this to say on his blog:
“This is sad, but it is also a sign of the times. Gladly, not all chains and hotels have followed this example. The fact is that many persons have come to faith in Jesus Christ by reading a Bible supplied to their hotel room by the Gideons. Many others have turned to the Bible when in crisis. Some have even decided against suicide when they read from the Gideon’s Bible. Are they now to look for salvation and solace from an iPod docking station or a goldfish?”
As a Mormon I especially think it is sad that the Marriott Hotel Chain (founded by a Mormon) is thinking of pulling Bibles from their hotel rooms.
Fortunatly not all hotel chains such as the Best Western will be following suit.

Horaayy..there are 3 comment(s) for me so far ;)
This is pretty sad, I too wouldn’t be offended to find various religious literature either. It just goes to show you how much more materialistic people are becoming. Gold fish can be comforting, but reading the bible brings even more comfort, especially since their going to have to replace the goldfish about every other day.
