How Do You Get A One Year To Go Where You Want Her To Go?

My 16 month old loves to go outside so I always make sure to set aside some time each day to take her outside. There are times I need to go talk to the apartment manager or check the mail but I have the hardest time getting her to stay with me. One minute she will be at my side holding my hand and the next minute she will be running away from me towards the playground (where I already let her play for half an hour).

When I finally get to the building with the mailboxes I have the hardest time getting her out of that building.

I usually end up having to carry her back to the apartment with her kicking and screaming while carrying a newborn in a sling as well. Any ideas on what to do? Or is she just too young to reason with right now?

Ah, toddler fun. To answer your questions yes, and no.

Yes, she’s too young to understand that if she runs into the parking lot , she may get hurt. But, she’s not too young to learn. At that moment, level down and look her in the eyes and explain to her that she cannot do that, or that you have to leave, therefore, you cannot stay at the park. THEN you pick her up and leave. LOL.

Just kidding. Talk to her. She may not understand, but she will.

that made no sense. LOL. She may not understand, but she will soon. Consistency is the key.

I can’t wait to get the girls together again.

Esme, you’re right, I think consistency is what will work. Probably not right away but soon (hopefully :) )
