How Do You Get A One Year To Go Where You Want Her To Go?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

My 16 month old loves to go outside so I always make sure to set aside some time each day to take her outside. There are times I need to go talk to the apartment manager or check the mail but I have the hardest time getting her to stay with me. One minute she will be at my side holding my hand and the next minute she will be running away from me towards the playground (where I already let her play for half an hour).

When I finally get to the building with the mailboxes I have the hardest time getting her out of that building.

I usually end up having to carry her back to the apartment with her kicking and screaming while carrying a newborn in a sling as well. Any ideas on what to do? Or is she just too young to reason with right now?

Silk Or Real?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Which do you prefer, silk trees and flowers or real trees and flowers in your homes?

I don’t think my mom liked to see the real plants die so she always had silk plants around the house.

I’m not sure which one I prefer more, I like real plants because they provide oxygen and make the air a little cleaner but I also like the silk plants because you don’t have to worry about them dying and their leaves withering and getting all over the place. They are also good for people who are allergic to some plants.

Rebekah’s First Doctor’s Visit

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Today I took Bekah for her Newborn Screening and she had her first check up since leaving the hospital. It was so sad seeing the nurse prick the baby’s finger and squeeze blood onto 4 circles for the PKU test, it seemed to take forever!

Yesterday while I was holding Rebekah I told my husband that Sariah was her size at a month old and sure enough today we found out that Rebekah has already gained a pound, at 9 days old she is now 8 lbs 13 oz. When Sariah was 13 days old she was 6 lbs 9 oz.

The doctor says that Rebekah is doing great and is very healthy.

Personalized Gifts For Kids

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Melissa is one of the most popular names given to girls born in the 80’s while my twin sister, Sara-Jayne is the only one I know of. As children I got pens and stickers with my name on it while my sister never could find her name, no Sara would not work. My daughter, Sariah also has a very unique name. With  Identity Direct it doesn’t matter how unique your kids names are you can get personalized gifts for them. There are great back to school products and products with their favourite disney and other TV characters.

My favourite products they have are the personalized Adventure Books where your child can be the star of the book!

Keeping BBQ’s Safe

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Middle to late summer is a popular time for Barbeques, however with potato salads being left out on the table too long or meat being undercooked many people end up with food poisoning.

According to the United States Department Of Agriculture Food Safety And Inspection Service, food such as meat, eggs and dairy products should be kept at temperatures of less than 40 degrees F (4 C) or higher than 140 degrees F (60 C). Foods that have been between the recommended temperatures should not be consumed after 2 hours.

American Inventor

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I have watched a few episodes of the American Inventor including last nights where the top 3 inventors were choosen for the public to vote on who should win. I didn’t vote but I am hoping that Greg Chavez wins, I think his invention, “The Guardinan Angel” is the best as it shows that he really worked hard to make it work and it will help save lives. The Guardian Angel is an Angel ornament people put on top of their christmas tree and if the tree goes on fire water will come from the angel to suppress the fire and an alarm will sound. I think this is a very clever idea and since Chavez is a firefighter he knows first hand how devestating christmas tree fires are.

The Canvas Is Here!

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

canvas.JPGYesterday I recieved this beautiful canvas of one of my wedding pictures that I ordered from canvasondemand.com. I am so pleased with how the canvas turned out and the company’s customer service.

Canvas On Demand is excellent at communicating with it’s customers. I sent a digital image of the picture first and they called me to let me know that the file was too small. My sister in Canada had the picture and she was able to mail the picture to them. The day they recieved the picture they called me to let me know that they had recieved it and would be mailing the canvas out the next day.

It was snowing when this picture was taken so there were a few white splotches which Canvas On Demand took out. The work done on this canvas is A+ quality and I could not be happier with it!

This is going to look beautiful up on our living room wall, I am sure that Canvas On Demand’s name will come up when ever we have guests over, I will certainly tell everyone about the great customer service they offer. I kind of wish I ordered this canvas closer to the end of the year as it would have made a wonderful  anniversary gift for my husband.

I would also like to thank my twin sister for helping me find the perfect picture and sending it to Canvas On Demand, I owe her an Arctic Circle Shake when she comes to visit next :)

Muscle Milk

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I am sure that most of us can agree that mother’s milk is best for babies. I know some babies have a really hard time nursing and some mothers are not able to which is why I am so grateful that I haven’t had any problems so far with either of my babies. The new one is so much easier to nurse than Sariah was but I should probably hold that comment for several weeks and see how Bekah does during her growth spurts.

The nourishing power of mothers milk doesn’t have to be just for babies though, I heard about this drink called muscle milk that claims to provide nutrition for athletes in a similar way that mother’s milk nourishes a baby. Interesting.

Spam Comments

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

All of you who have blogs know how annoying spam comments are.  I get many spam comments daily with the most popular ones being about Real Estate, Phentermine and diruflux. I think it is kind of pointless for people to be spamming blogs since most people including myself have comment moderation so these spam comments never make it on most blogs.

Is BP Environmentally Friendly?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Recently the Chicago Tribunepublished an article stating that the BP oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana is planning to dump more ammonia and other toxic wastes into Lake Michigan. The Chicago Tribune complains that the state and federal officials are making exemptions to allow BP to further pollute the great lakes, however the officials believe that BP is not exhibiting any action that will harm the environment.

The News-Sentinel gives a more neutral view of the BP situation. They state that while Canadian Crude Oil requires more processing, obtaining oil from Canada will provide more jobs and is a better alternative than obtaining oil from the Middle East. The article also informs us that BP will still remain within federal pollution guidelines and that BP is implementing a “new diffuser apparatus that will reduce the concentration of pollutants in the water by mixing them with clean water 200 feet from the shore”.

BP is known for actively promoting itself as an environmentally friendly company. They are holding to that image by releasing their BP Whiting Refinery Fact Sheet to the public. A few of these facts include:

Modern Technology- BP operates a modern wastewater plant in Whiting and plans to invest about $150 million to enhance its treatment capability.

Collaborative, transparent approach - BP is working with federal, state and local officials, regulators, community and environmental organizations and communities to develop environmentally friendly plans.

Only treated water into Lake Michigan - BP states that what is released from their refinery is more than 99.9 % treated water, not sludge. The sludge is treated separately according to state and federal requirements and never put into Lake Michigan.

BP encourages the public to be educated about the facts and then form their own opinions about the issue.

Rebekah’s Birth Story

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

On Wednesday evening my husband was working late so I went on MSN to chat with my twin sister. I shut the computer down around 8:30 and a little after 9pm I started getting contractions. Little Sariah knew mommy was in pain and she patted my back. My husband got home around 9:30 and asked if I was ok. I told him I thought I might be in labour and that I was going to try and get some rest. He put Sariah to bed and then every 15 minutes told me to tell him when I wanted to go to the hospital.

A little after 2 am the contractions were 3 min apart so I told him we should go. He took Sariah over to some friends who offered to watch her. We got to the hospital around 2:20 am and I was dialated to an 8! The midwife came soon after and said that a midwife in training was coming up and asked if she could do the delivery. I was ok with that, it took her 4 tries to break my water and I felt like changing my mind but she did end up doing a very good job. After my water broke I started pushing and 30 minutes later at 3:51 am on July 19th 2007  our precious new daughter was born! I felt so relieved to finally have her out but I was shocked by how big she was at 7 lbs 13 oz she was a pound and a half bigger than Sariah.

This delivery was a lot different than Sariah’s and the recovery has been a lot easier which I credit the midwives for. I wish I had them the first time! With Sariah it was the doctor and nurses telling me what to do and this time it was the midwives telling me to do what I want to do. I didn’t get an IV and they took the blood pressure monitor and the monitor around my waist off which made the pushing easier. They checked the baby’s heart rate every several minutes and I did have to get a shot of pitocin after the delivery to prevent blood clots and because Rebekah’s blood type is A positive I had to get the Rho-Gam Shot again.

Early that Afternoon Sariah got to meet her baby sister. She seemed excited to see the baby but more interested in eating my lunch, which she ate half of!

I came home the day after Rebekah was born, I did sleep a lot over the weekend and I take a nap when Sariah goes for a nap. I now spend most of my time making sure Sariah doesn’t hurt the baby.  Since I only stopped nursing Sariah 2.5 months ago I was worried that she would want to start nursing again when she saw me feeding Rebekah but she seems perfectly fine. Sariah loves to give her baby sister kisses and tries to get her to play with the toys.
